Pure palladium process: cyanide-free electroplating. Legor Group goes all out for sustainability

ABOUT

In the markets where the Legor Group company operates - Jewelry & Luxury and Fashion & Decorative - there are many vertical companies, dealing only with alloys or exclusively with galvanic solutions. One of the Legor Group company’s added values, on the other hand, is the synergy between the two specialisations, and thus the ability to serve clients with products and services that meet their entire needs, thus guaranteeing a global approach in line with the company’s founding values: constant innovation and transformation, and customer care.

Among the choices that the Legor Group company makes to concretise its responsible approach to business and its commitment to sustainability, is the choice of only using precious metals (Gold, Silver, Platinum, Palladium and Rhodium) 100% from recycled sources and 100% compliant with RJC CoC, and non-precious metals (Silicon, Tin, Indium, Cobalt, Gallium, Germanium and Copper) 100% from recycled sources for all its products within the UNI EN ISO 14021:2021 certification.

Particular attention is also paid to the experimentation and development of new galvanic solutions. Historically, galvanic solutions contain heavy metals, such as nickel, lead, or cadmium, whereas the Legor Group company, thanks to the careful work of its in-house R&D laboratories, has developed solutions without metals that are harmful to the end user but also to the galvanic operator, who is exposed to the substances during their use. Examples of this are the innovative cyanide-free galvanic solutions such as FLASHGOLDEVO (a flash gold plating process formulated without the use of cyanide and nickel-free chemical complexes) and GOLDENROSE, a galvanic process suitable for decorative applications that require a gold deposit with special hardness, which is easy to use, cyanide-free, and also lead- and cadmium-free.

FOCUS

One of the latest and most technologically advanced products offered by the Legor Group company is PDSTARK-100, the new thick pure palladium process, designed for jewellery, watchmaking, eyewear, and fashion accessories with a shiny white finish. The PDSTARK family of processes, to which this process belongs, produces a whiter, brighter, and less porous colour deposit than traditional palladium baths. The formulations are designed to reduce environmental impact and safeguard the health of the operator, through the use of non-harmful chemical compounds.

What makes these features possible?

Firstly, it is a pure palladium process at neutral pH, thus free of ammonia and other alloying metals such as nickel or cobalt. Furthermore, by using this solution, an operator can deposit greater thicknesses (greater than one micron) without cracking despite the fact that it is a buildup of a 100% palladium alloy. The deposit obtained is of high brightness (L*>86), a colouration equal to or in some cases brighter than that of palladium-nickel. The compactness of the deposit also makes PDSTARK-100 ideal as an intermediate layer for PVD application.

However, the Legor Group company does not only excel in the product. During the course of the year, the multinational Group promoted and participated in dialogues and discussions on the sustainable future of the industry on several occasions: from “Precious Fashion” - the first talk dedicated to fashion accessories for the luxury sector organised during the OroArezzo event - to the “The metal accessory supply chain: innovations and prospects” workshop organised by Polimoda Professional Training and Made for Change.

As evidence of its constant commitment to creating value over time on various sustainability fronts, the Legor Group company has drawn up and will soon publish its first integrated report, an indispensable tool for describing the economic, environmental, social and governance (ESG) aspects where the company focuses its attention in a structured framework.
