Vegetable tanned leather: a process born from nature

A member of the Genuine Italian Vegetable Tanned Leather Consortium and LWG GOLD RATED certified, the Conceria il Ponte company has specialised in vegetable tanning for over 60 years, the traditional tanning method that gives leather a very high quality for timeless ageing. Vegetable tanning guarantees the absence of toxic substances such as azo dyes, nickel, pentachlorophenol, and chromium VI. In July, the tannery took part in the Lineapelle London and New York trade fairs, before coming to the Milan edition in September: the aim is to make the naturalness, quality, and sustainability of vegetable-tanned leather known throughout the world.

What is vegetable-tanned leather? It is a 100% natural process that makes use of tannins, namely plant extracts that bestow leathers with a unique appearance that becomes more distinctive and transforms over time. Thanks to its ability to bind to animal proteins, tannin penetrates the leather and remains permanently inside the fibres, maintaining its effectiveness unaltered, bestowing leathers with warm tones that tend to resurface with use. This is why it is said that a vegetable-tanned leather item bears the marks of the wearer: it changes with the person over time and lasts a lifetime.
