What is needle felting, the technique that has taken over social media?

Everyone wants it, but above all everyone wants to understand how it’s made. A jacket from Ferrari’s new collection has gone viral, sparking curiosity about its production process: a garment that combines leather on the upper part and wool on the lower part. The two materials, however, blend seamlessly without any visible cuts or stitching.

An effect that had already appeared on the runways of the Fall/Winter 2026 collections. In Balenciaga’s ready-to-wear by Pierpaolo Piccioli, check and herringbone patterns are merged with solid surfaces; Miu Miu presents leather jackets with integrated fur hems, and earlier Yohji Yamamoto had introduced this technique in his menswear collection. On social media, the phenomenon had already taken off at the end of 2025, when a TikTok creator showed a sweater with denim hems from the Chinese brand JNBY.

Mystery solved: this technique is called needle felting and is a particular embroidery process that allows two materials to be fused into a single surface without stitching. The process uses special needles with micro-hooks that penetrate the materials, intertwining fibers and compacting them together. The fabrics can then be stabilized with heat bonding or adhesives, increasing resistance and enabling further processing.

A highly versatile solution that allows even very different materials to be combined, creating garments with strong visual impact. A technique that fits into a broader trend: the return to more visible craftsmanship, helping build value around the product and justify increasingly higher prices.
