Sustainability, Innovation and the Future: Interview with Simone Canclini, president of Milano Unica

How do you see the exhibition landscape at the moment?

"I prefer not to go into the general dynamics of the exhibition industry, as it is not our goal to compare ourselves with other events. Instead, I can tell you about the current state of Milano Unica and our recent successes. Milano Unica has managed to grow significantly thanks to our strategy focused on quality and exhibitor selection. We have seen an increase in exhibition space of more than 20 percent over the previous edition, reaching a new record for occupied space. This success is the result of our efforts to offer an event that highlights the excellence of the textile and fashion industry."

What were the main factors that contributed to this success?

"The success of Milano Unica is due to several key factors. First of all, we focus on the quality of the exhibitors: we select only companies that produce textiles and accessories in Italy and Europe and demonstrate strong industrial credibility. In addition, we invite customers without charging an entrance fee, creating an exclusive and high-quality environment. This approach attracts customers who are looking for sustainable, innovative and high-quality products, rather than simple ones."

How does Milano Unica promote sustainability and innovation?

"Milano Unica is strongly committed to sustainability. We have created a dedicated space for eco-friendly fabrics and accessories and support projects that promote circular fashion. We also encourage exhibitors to adopt sustainable practices and provide them with tools to improve the environmental impact of their productions. We continuously innovate our collections to meet market needs, focusing on sustainability and product traceability."

What are the new features of this edition of Milano Unica?

"In this edition we have introduced several new features, including a new area dedicated to bath and beach fabrics, and we have expanded the section dedicated to innovation with a significant growth in the number of start-ups present. Every year we work to offer an event that responds to market needs and continues to evolve."

Looking ahead, what are the main guidelines of your presidency?

"First, continue to focus on quality, sustainability and traceability of exhibitors. Second, expand the number of international qualified clients through collaboration with strategic partners such as Lice. Third, make exhibitors perceive Milano Unica not only as a trade event, but as a common home for textile entrepreneurs. Fourth, to explore new markets, such as the United States, with more targeted events. Finally, we are working to expand the offering of textiles and accessories by introducing new categories such as sportswear and beachwear fashion."

What are the main technological innovations you see in the textile and fashion industry?

"One of the most significant innovations will be the implementation of the European Directive on Extended Producer Responsibility. This law, scheduled for 2025, will bring profound changes to the textile industry, promoting the recycling of pre-consumer and post-consumer materials. This will represent a real revolution, requiring companies to adopt new practices and technologies for recycling textiles and materials."

If Europe adopts this directive, how do you think it will affect the fashion industry in Italy and beyond?

"The directive will be key in pushing the industry toward greater sustainability and circularity. If implemented well, it will allow Italy and Europe to gain a competitive advantage globally. The European legislation will serve as a guide for other countries, and companies that prepare to meet these standards will be in an advantageous position going forward."
