The first edition of “Behind the shoes,” the educational contest by Leather&Luxury and Istituto Marangoni Firenze dedicated to young shoe designers, has closed

It is student Bianca Salomon who is the winner of “Behind the shoes,” the educational project in the form of a contest conceived by fashion magazine Leather&Luxury in collaboration with Istituto Marangoni Firenze, which reached its epilogue last July 9th. Over a course that started in March 2024, Bianca and her colleagues Barbara Amaral, Gaia Moretti, Grace Pang, Irem Yazici, Juana Querio and Veronica Fu, all students of Isituto Marangoni Florence's Master in Luxury Accessories Design and Management, were tasked with creating a capsule collection of women's footwear: boots and/or heeled shoes or sneakers according to the trends of the SS25 season. A project complete with brand identity, target persona, moodboard, model sketches until the final step: the production of a real shoe prototype.

A complex and challenging process during which the young designers were supported by their teachers and were able to take advantage of the services of some leading companies in the Made in Italy manufacturing supply chain, partners of the initiative. True excellences of the sector such as Lampo, Taurini, BC Servizi, Skyline, Ramponi, Marchio d'Oro, Italian Converter, David Leather Expression, Rino Mastrotto, Dami, Idea Ricamo, Tacchificio Molinella and Simonetta Rossi.

Each student was required to create a collection of at least four pairs of shoes, consistent with the two assigned themes, “New Formality” and “Sport Smart.”“I am really happy and honored to have taken part in #behindtheshoes,” says Bianca Salomon, “It was a challenging challenge, I am very grateful to have collaborated alongside my classmates, they were also an inspiration to me. Our teachers helped us with everything, it meant a lot because it was a difficult project that required all the efforts of us students. It was a great opportunity to see the behind-the-scenes of making a shoe, I had absolutely no idea what it really meant. In addition, during this experience we also built wonderful relationships with partner companies who provided us with materials and assistance to bring our creations to life. Each of them was very welcoming and patient in explaining in detail how things were to be done. When I finally saw my shoe made, I thought it was crazy!”

“Behind the shoes” will return in 2025 in search of new talents: ‘This contest was created on the one hand to inspire and incentivize the creativity of new generations of designers,’ concludes Matteo Rovelli, CEO of Leather&Luxury, ”and on the other hand to support them in the processes of design and supply of materials as well as in the respect of delivery times and sustainability of their projects. This is an educational path to make the students aware that, beyond the final outcome, they were able to work alongside the partner companies of this initiative. An opportunity for growth for everyone that gives us the enthusiasm to get to work already for the next edition of this beautiful adventure.”
